About Prospect Mountain Wildlife Management Area

Located in the Adirondack Park of northeastern New York, the Prospect Mountain Wildlife Management Area (WMA) covers a diverse landscape of forests, wetlands, and mountain terrain. It primarily sits near Lake George in Warren County and protects habitats for a variety of native wildlife including deer, black bear, and numerous bird species. The area’s centerpiece, Prospect Mountain, rises to approximately 2,031 feet, offering panoramic views of Lake George, the surrounding Adirondack peaks, and the Champlain Valley. Historically, this location has been managed to balance conservation with public outdoor recreation. Visitors can enjoy hiking the well-maintained Prospect Mountain Fire Tower Trail, which ascends the mountain to an historic fire observation tower built in the early 1900s, now open to the public as a viewing platform. The WMA also supports mountain biking and cross-country skiing, with trail systems suited for multiple uses. Fishing and hunting are permitted in regulated seasons, supporting traditional outdoor activities. The area’s relatively moderate elevation and proximity to popular tourist towns make it accessible, attracting both casual visitors and outdoor enthusiasts. Its mix of forest types includes northern hardwoods and conifers, supporting a healthy ecosystem and offering excellent opportunities for birdwatching and wildlife photography. The combination of scenic vistas, accessible trails, and conservation efforts makes Prospect Mountain Wildlife Management Area an appealing destination in the Adirondack region.
